Ready to spend a solid 6 hours working the prime inshore waters around St. Augustine? Captain Clay Philips knows these waters like the back of his hand, and this extended half-day charter gives you the time you need to really get into the fish. We're talking about exploring the productive flats, oyster bars, and backwater creeks of the Matanzas River system where redfish, trout, and flounder call home year-round. This isn't your typical rushed fishing trip – with 6 hours on the water, we can adapt to the tides, move spots when needed, and put you on the best bite of the day.
Captain Clay runs a top-rated operation that focuses on putting you on fish while keeping things relaxed and fun. You'll be fishing out of a well-equipped boat that can handle up to 4 anglers comfortably, giving everyone plenty of room to cast and fight fish. The extended timeframe means we're not watching the clock – if the bite is hot at one spot, we can stay put and capitalize. If things slow down, we've got time to run to different areas and find where the fish are holding. The Matanzas River system offers incredible variety, from shallow grass flats where redfish cruise in just a few feet of water to deeper creek mouths where trout stack up during tide changes. Captain Clay reads these waters daily and knows exactly where to position the boat based on conditions, season, and what species are most active.
We fish light tackle here, which makes every catch more exciting and gives you that authentic inshore experience. Captain Clay provides quality rods and reels spooled with the right line weight for the conditions – usually 10 to 15-pound test that can handle the oyster bars and structure without being too heavy for the fight. Depending on what we're targeting and how they're feeding, we'll switch between live bait and artificials throughout the day. Live shrimp is deadly on trout and flounder, while cut bait works magic on black drum and sheepshead around the docks. When fish are aggressive, throwing paddle tails and topwater plugs can produce explosive strikes that'll get your heart pumping. The beauty of having 6 hours is we can experiment with different techniques and really dial in what's working best that particular day.
"Fished with Capt Clay. Worked hard to put us on fish. Expert on the local waters and best spots. We all caught fish. Very chill vibe but still focused on our experience. Would not hesitate to book again." - Greg
Redfish are the crown jewel of inshore fishing here in St. Augustine, and these copper-colored bruisers are available year-round in the Matanzas River system. They typically run 18 to 30 inches, with some oversized bull reds that'll test your drag and your arms. Spring and fall offer the most consistent action when schools of reds work the flats during moving tides. What makes redfish so special is their fight – they're powerful, stubborn, and will make long runs that strip line off your reel. Plus, they're beautiful fish with that distinctive black spot near the tail that makes for great photos.
Southern Flounder are the masters of camouflage, lying flat on sandy bottoms waiting to ambush baitfish. These flatfish are most active during cooler months from October through March, and the Matanzas River offers perfect habitat with its mix of sand flats and grass beds. Flounder fishing requires patience and technique – you'll feel that distinctive tap-tap bite, then wait for them to fully commit before setting the hook. They're excellent table fare and provide a nice change of pace from the harder-fighting species we target.
Black Drum are the heavyweights of the inshore scene, with fish commonly reaching 20 to 40 pounds in these waters. They're most active during spring months when they move into shallow water to spawn, often found around oyster bars and dock pilings where they crush crabs and shellfish. When you hook into a quality black drum, you'll know it immediately – they fight with pure power and stubbornness, often trying to wrap you around structure. Their drumming sound when brought to the boat is something every angler should experience.
Sheepshead are the ultimate challenge fish, known for their light bites and ability to steal bait without getting hooked. These black-and-white striped fish are most active during winter months around structure like docks, bridges, and oyster bars. They require finesse and quick reflexes, but landing a quality sheepshead is incredibly rewarding. They're also fantastic eating, which makes the technical challenge even more worthwhile.
Blacktip Shark add serious excitement to any inshore trip, especially during warmer months when they move into shallow water chasing baitfish. These sharks typically run 3 to 5 feet and provide heart-pounding action with their acrobatic jumps and powerful runs. Captain Clay knows the areas where blacktips commonly hunt, and there's nothing quite like watching one of these predators crush a topwater lure in shallow water.
This extended half-day charter gives you the best of both worlds – serious fishing time without committing to a full day on the water. Captain Clay's reputation speaks for itself, and his knowledge of the Matanzas River system will put you on fish while keeping the experience fun and relaxed. Whether you're looking to target a specific species or just want to catch whatever's biting, this 6-hour adventure provides the flexibility and expertise you need for a memorable day. The St. Augustine inshore fishery is world-class, and there's no better way to experience it than with a renowned local guide who lives and breathes these
