Looking for a solid fishing trip without burning a whole day? Captain Clay Philips has you covered with his half-day inshore charter on the famous Matanzas River. This isn't some tourist trap - it's real fishing in one of Northeast Florida's most productive backwater systems. The Matanzas has been feeding families and filling coolers for generations, and Clay knows every oyster bar, grass flat, and creek mouth where fish like to hang out. Whether you're bringing the kids for their first real fishing experience or you're a seasoned angler wanting to sample St. Augustine's inshore scene, this trip delivers consistent action in beautiful surroundings.
Clay runs a tight ship but keeps things relaxed - exactly what you want in a guide. You'll launch into the Matanzas River system, which is basically a maze of creeks, flats, and marshes that stretches for miles behind Anastasia Island. The water here is shallow, clear, and loaded with structure that holds fish year-round. Your half-day gives you plenty of time to hit multiple spots without feeling rushed. Clay's boat maxes out at three anglers, so you're not elbow-to-elbow with strangers fighting over prime fishing spots. He'll have you working different techniques depending on what's biting - maybe sight-casting to tailing redfish on the flats in the morning, then switching to bottom fishing around oyster bars when the tide changes. The scenery alone is worth the trip, with old Spanish moss hanging over quiet creeks and pelicans diving all around you.
This is inshore fishing at its finest - all about finesse and reading the water. Clay sets everyone up with light spinning gear that lets you feel every tap and run. You'll be throwing everything from live shrimp under popping corks to soft plastics worked slowly across grass beds. When the fish are shallow and spooky, he'll have you casting light jigheads with paddle tails, keeping the boat positioned just right so you can cover water without spooking everything in sight. The beauty of the Matanzas system is the variety - one minute you're working a deep creek channel for flounder, the next you're sight-fishing redfish in knee-deep water over oyster beds. Clay provides all the tackle, but if you've got favorite rods or lures, bring them along. He's always up for trying something new if it might put more fish in the boat.

Southern Flounder are the ghosts of the flats, lying perfectly camouflaged in sand and mud waiting to ambush baitfish. These flatfish can be tricky to spot, but Clay knows how to read the bottom and position the boat where flounder like to set up. They're most active during moving water, especially around creek mouths and channel edges where the current brings food right to them. Fall and winter are prime time for doormat flounder, with fish pushing 20+ inches common. When you hook one, they don't jump or make long runs - instead they bulldoze along the bottom with surprising strength. The fight might not be flashy, but flounder are hands-down some of the best eating fish in these waters.
Black Drum are the bulldozers of the inshore world, and the Matanzas system holds some real bruisers. These fish love structure - oyster bars, bridge pilings, creek bends with deep holes. They're bottom feeders with incredible senses of smell and taste, so fresh bait is key. Clay often targets them with cut shrimp or small crabs around the tide changes when they're most active. Black drum fight dirty, using their broad sides and stubborn nature to test your drag system. The smaller ones (called "puppy drum") are great table fare, while the big broodstock fish over 16 inches should go back to keep the population healthy. Spring and fall see the biggest concentrations, but resident fish are catchable year-round.
Sheepshead are the pickpockets of the fish world - they'll steal your bait before you even know they're there. These black-and-white striped beauties have human-like teeth perfect for crushing barnacles and oysters. Clay targets them around any hard structure in the river system, especially during the cooler months when they school up. You need small hooks, light line, and lightning-fast reflexes to hook these bait thieves. They're notorious for their light bite - often just a slight tick on the line before they're gone with your shrimp. But when you do connect, sheepshead fight surprisingly hard for their size and make outstanding table fare with sweet, flaky white meat.
Redfish are the crown jewel of inshore fishing, and St. Augustine's waters produce some beautiful fish. These copper-colored bruisers are built for shallow water, with downturned mouths perfect for rooting around oyster bars and grass flats. Clay loves targeting them during the warmer months when they're most active, often in water so shallow their backs are exposed. Redfish have incredible eyesight and can be spooky, but when you make the right cast and watch one turn on your bait, it's pure magic. They fight like freight trains, making sizzling runs and using every oyster bar in the area to try cutting your line. The slot-size fish (18-27 inches)
